Fires
Almost two-thirds of reported home fire deaths in 2003-2006 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.*
  • The use of fire protection methods such as operational smoke detectors and fire retardant coatings can provide a great deal of fire protection for the inhabitants of a structure.
Smoking
The most common items first ignited in home smoking-material fire deaths were upholstered furniture and mattresses or bedding.*
  • Home furnishings are the number one contributing factor toward what is commonly known to the fire service community as 'flashover.'  Flashover happens when the heat from the fire and oxygen in the room cause the entire contents of the room to ignite.  In order to prevent ignition or inhibit the spread of flame on interior furnishings, use Fabric Fire Gard to increase the amount of time occupants have to exit the area more safely and to assist in containing the fire.
Intentional Fires
In 2003-2006, 17,900 intentionally set home structure fires were reported each year, resulting in 320 deaths and $542 million in property loss.*
  • Property damage as a result of fire in occupied and unoccupied homes may be minimized through the use of fire retardant coatings and intumescent paints.  Applied as a clear or pigmented, low VOC, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic fire protection option, Wood Gard (for framing lumber) and Plus (for walls, ceilings and other paintable surfaces) will provide sustainable fire protection for the life of the structure, which may ultimately limit the amount of injury, property loss and damage from both intentional or unintentional fires.
